SAR is an acronym for Synthetic Aperture Radar, the revolutionary technology for remote sensing and Earth Observation. SAR is a system in which multiple radar images are processed to yield the highest resolution images available now.
WHY SAR SATELLITE IMAGES?
SAR is the starting point of a new era in satellite monitoring, in fact the images can be taken independently from the time of the day (or night). The radar pulses are not affected by clouds, therefore SAR can see “all weather, day & night” .
Every detected SAR image contains a large availability of data for many applications, through the use of proven tools (content image analysis, change detection, moving target detection, coherent analysis, polarimetric analysis, interferometric analysis, etc.).
The technology is perfectly dedicated for Security, Defense, Intelligence, Environment, Pre-Post Emergency, Cartography and Planning.
All the above mentioned advantages are obtained by the active device of SAR technology, instead of other technologies, that are passive.
SAR TECHNOLOGY (NEW)
- Active Device: it allows to take images independently from the time of day (or night) and with every weather conditions.
- X band 9.6 GHz: it allows the maximum resolution (1m) , ideal for accurate surveillance and detailed monitoring.
- Images are not affected by shadows.
- Polarimetry and interferometry to detect all precoius terrain information and all structural and infrastructural changes.
The innovative SAR Technology is very different from the traditional Optical Technology, characterized by:
- Passive Device: it works only during the day and with good weather conditions (it is affected by clouds).
- Thermal infrared sonsors can be used by night, but only with very low resolution.
- The shadows on the scene at morning and evening create very big black areas in the images.
- Optical technology is limited in the detection of terrain characterization or structural andinfrastructural changes.
